Red Screen
How to use a pure red full screen for testing, lighting and night viewing
A full red screen is used to test a display's red sub-pixels, add red accent lighting to photos and videos, create a moody background for streams, and provide dim light that is gentle on your night vision.
Dim red light disturbs your eyes' dark adaptation much less than white or blue light, which is why astronomers and pilots use red lights at night. Set the red screen to a low brightness and it can serve as a soft light for reading star charts or moving around a dark room.
Place a phone, tablet or monitor showing the red screen near your subject as a colored accent or rim light. It works well for dramatic portraits, product shots and music videos. Move the screen closer or change its brightness to control the intensity.
On a pure red (#FF0000) screen only the red sub-pixels are lit. Any black dot means a dead red sub-pixel, while a green, blue or white dot means another sub-pixel is stuck on. Repeat the test on the green and blue screens to cover every sub-pixel.
