Black Screen
Everything you can do with a pure black full screen
A full black screen is used to check a display for stuck or bright pixels, spot backlight bleed, make fingerprints and dust easy to see while cleaning, and dim a screen without turning it off. It is also handy as a distraction-free background while listening to music, podcasts or meditation audio.
On OLED and AMOLED displays, yes. Black pixels on an OLED panel are switched off, so a black screen uses far less power than a bright image. On LCD screens the backlight stays on, so the savings are minimal. For the lowest power use, also turn your brightness down.
Yes. In a dim room a full-screen black page with low brightness looks almost identical to a switched-off monitor, while your computer keeps running. Click anywhere or press Esc to bring your desktop back instantly.
Turn off the lights, set your monitor to about 50% brightness, open the black screen in full screen and look at the panel straight on. Uneven lighter patches near the edges or corners are backlight bleed; glow that shifts as you move your head is IPS glow, which is normal for IPS panels.
A black background makes any pixel that stays lit stand out as a tiny white, red, green or blue dot. Go full screen and scan the display slowly from corner to corner. If you find one, check it again on the red, green and blue screens to see which sub-pixel is stuck.
Yes. Pick 720p, 1080p, 4K or enter a custom width and height, then click Download to save a solid black PNG. It works well as a minimal wallpaper, a video placeholder or a blank slide background.
